I tweeted the ITYSL post to a popular Twitter account and it brought 289 visitors to the site. I’m not sure how the server was able to handle a 289x traffic increase, but it held. Our Jetpack plugin stopped automatically posting to the SplittingTens Twitter Account (13 followers), and it wasn’t producing the thumbnail which garners the attention for click bait, so I had to install a new All In One SEO plugin, and that amazingly worked. I tweeted the link to the account, they re-tweeted it, and SplittingTens hit its highest traffic volume in years. It didn’t hurt that I spent some time in Photoshop engineering the feature image and I thought the post was pretty good.
Who Cares?
This example shows that you have to work for eyeballs. As much as I’d like to think that after 15 years of blogging, Google would realize how much of a necessity this website is…and sadly…it does not. The aim isn’t to make money with this site so I don’t care about traffic, however, it’s nice to feel appreciated once in a while. Why does traffic equal importance?
Some may say the only meaningful value comes internally. I don’t buy this. I’ve written 1,000’s of posts and there is no intrinsic well being that comes from posting. My goal is to entertain and give introspective to my plight of life. The first part of that is simple. My personal beliefs can transfer to you. I like Hozier. I like Black Mirror. I play Titleist Pro V’s. You can say, “Tom’s not a total dope, maybe I like this too.” Then when I see you at a party you can tell me how much you hate the website, and how my taste is shitty, and we can get a hearty laugh before I Irish exit. The second part of providing introspective is where I hope to provide value. I want to give out information for nothing in return aside from you saying, “this guy’s not a dope.” That’s it. Yes, UAVS is going bankrupt. Yes, Cameron Smith probably won’t win this US Open. Yes, I never know what I’m talking about, but I’m aware no one does. At least I don’t charge you money for it.
With that in mind, it’s rewarding for me to pass off what I’m doing to other people. I don’t believe much in charity. The entire industry is warped with the people running the charities benefitting as much as those in need. It coincides with religion being used as a guise to help people. Man made the higher power for god sakes. There is nothing I’m looking for in return for this. Literally nothing except your entertainment and having it as a platform to entertain and output my brain. I see the world wildly and in wild ways. I don’t care if you agree with me either. I enjoy open dialogue on subjects and I’m not afraid of getting myself cancelled. My core set of beliefs has worked for me up to this point and I have the ability to adapt for the second half of my life. This is only the set up to truly expand potential.
