It was past 1am on Saturday night and I’m sweating the Oregon game. I have $250 on Oregon +2.5, and I’m trying to make up for my previous two underdog losses, so I’m stuck pretty good. Concurrently, I have $20 each on Sam Baristow (130-1) and Kiradech Aphibarnrat (180-1) in the Singapore classic which started at 10pm. Jesper Svennson is in 1st place after a birdie birdie to finish. Aphibarnrat makes a 20 foot par putt on 17 and then eagles 18 to get into a playoff. Baristow misses his eagle putt on 18 to miss the playoff. Here were the cash out options (Aphibarnrat on the top) the hole before to help you understand the decision making.
I can barely keep my eyes open and hedge $650 on Svennson at -115. I’m in an out of consciousness at this point only to stir and see Oregon be blown out in the 3rd overtime. Meanwhile, I hear in my sleep the 3rd playoff hole and realize Aphibarnrat loses. So close and I only walk away with a few hundred bucks instead of a few thousand. Should have hedged more on Svennson. Tough sledding.
Betting Golf
The next day Mackenzie Hughes, 130-1, was leading the tournament after 10 holes before he imploded. I managed to bet Nelly Korda at 14-1 on Saturday to salvage a bad day as she won in a playoff. In no other sport is there this type of fun as it only takes a bit of money to win big, assuming you ever win. If my stories so far have given any indication, it’s not easy.
When I talk about this type of gambling, people think I’m loony. You bet on the Korn Ferry Tour? The Champions Tour? DP World Tour?
I don’t hide that this is a bit degenerate especially since I’m down 13k over the last few years. I’d be lying if I wasn’t trying to be profitable for image sake to substantiate the amount of time I put into it. Now, I don’t make the picks per say, that’s Bradley Todd, so it’s only the investment of watching, but it’s hard to justify this as a worthwhile exercise. Nevertheless, I still enjoy it and I don’t think you’ll find more knowledgeable golf fans. No real point to this post other than some insight into where some of my time is spent.
