After declaring that I’m going hit a deer with my car I figured it was a good idea to get a dash cam. Am I excited that I’ll get to rewatch the impending collision as many times as I want? Not really. I don’t know if I’ll want to watch it at all. But the dash cam goes beyond that! There are a dozen situations where it can come in handy.
What I Got – Garmin Dash Cam Mini 3
I should clarify, Meg actually got this for me as a gift because I’d mentioned it. I never pulled the trigger because I thought it would be hard to set up and require a lot of storage to literally record every ride. But that’s not the case!
It plugs it into the USB port of the car and it has a little memory card to record everything. When the card is full, it automatically deletes the oldest video to make room for the new one. You download an app and can get the videos off the app onto your phone. Easy-peasy.

Will I Ever Need It?
I’ve been driving for almost 20 years and only one time – when I hit a bird – did I wish I could watch what just happened. Other than that, I’ve had a pretty uneventful driving career. However, it’s so easy to have and all it takes is one thing to happen where you’ll be kicking yourself if you don’t. Having it in the car makes me a little nervous for one thing:
What will I be listening to when something happens?
I don’t know what the most embarrassing thing would be. Singing Man! I Feel Like a Woman!? Some podcast about how to be a better lover? I don’t know. I’ve also found that I speak more than I expected when alone in the car. It’s mostly repeating stuff that I’m listening to. I don’t need to be mimicking something in an Indian accent when I rear end the car in front of me and have to present the video in court.
Anyway, now that I have it installed it probably increases my chances of an accident happening by like 1000%. I’ll be sure to post the footage here if something does. Stay tuned.
