The half asleep brain is incredible.

Last night, after reading some of my Led Zeppelin book, I went to bed mentally deep diving through the live rendition of Stairway from 1973, just playing through it in my head while half asleep.

Then I got fixated on that first note. Literally the first note of the song. Where did I know that note from? I was a bit delirious but I knew it was from somewhere.

Then, BAM. It hit me. That note, whatever note it is, is the exact same as the first note from Lampshades on Fire by Modest Mouse. It had to be, albeit that’s played on a piano.

Listen for yourself:

Now I just had to figure out what note it was, so I played Stairway mentally on a guitar in my head, seventh fret of the D string is how it starts, and saw that it was an A. I told myself I’d remember tomorrow and confirm that Lampshades on Fire does in fact start with an A on the piano. Then I fell asleep.

Well, it’s tomorrow. I wrote ALL of the above without actually checking. So you will see my live reaction right now to whether or not the note is the same.

I just checked it and….!!!!!

It’s wrong. Wow. Lampshades starts with a G, literally one note lower.

That is disappointing, to say the least.

If I was right I’d say the half asleep brain can make these subconscious connections that our normally-operating brains can’t, but instead it just made me look like a no talent hack.

I thought about deleting this post entirely, and probably still should, but I’ve come this far. Hope you enjoyed.
