There are 5 bands that make up New Wave. The Cure, The Smiths, Talking Heads, Depeche Mode, and New Order. This 80’s era of music is generally frowned upon as weaker than classic rock due to the synth sounds and pussier than grunge which followed in the 90’s. This is one of my favorite genres of music.
The Cure’s song A Fragile Thing is being played on the Spectrum and Alt Nation, 2 of my favorite channels on Sirius. The age demographic is 30+ for the Spectrum and 15-30 for Alt Nation. For a new Cure song to be played, and voted #10 into the Alt 18, is unusual. I imagine a high school kid hearing the song and asking themselves, “I like this song, who are the Cure?” Oh, Robert Smith is this weird ass emo dude from the 80’s who made great music.
Is it that much different from me liking Pink Floyd & Led Zeppelin. Yes, because Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin stopped. Bands don’t release music 40 years later and then are still popular in a youth culture, especially because I can’t imagine it’s “hip” to like The Cure. So what gives? I’m legitimately perplexed. If you told them to listen to Just Like Heaven, a legitimate top 100 song for me, would they like that? Or is it specifically that song that they like? In case any of them find my blog here is my list of top Cure songs.
