Do I Like John Mayer?

Ed McGrath played a song called No Such Thing when I was a freshman in college. It was by this new artist John Mayer. I illegally downloaded it on KaZaa and also liked the song Neon. I didn’t give John Mayer another thought until he stole my girlfriend Jennifer Love Hewitt (current JLH got too much surgery) and he became public enemy #1. His success with the ladies went on for decades and I continued to despise him. Some time passed and I forgave him in November 2023 when he released the channel Life on Sirius. I listened to it off and on sporadically and then recently I’d been getting tired of AltNation and the Spectrum so I put it back on. I recently changed 80’s on 8 to Life on my presets.

Why do I Like It? – I’ll begin by saying I have no musical ability. In 3rd grade I picked up Jeff Walters viola and used the bow as a sword. So hearing John Mayer give his opinions on why he likes varying artists and their songs is insightful. For instance, he said how good of a guitar player Ed Sheeran is and how he watches his right hand while he plays. He mentioned that Hozier is the best dressed artist on tour. Other DJ’s only play the music and give updates on the weather, what the songs about, and touring schedules.

The music he plays, although a tad too poppy for me (Shawn Mendes, Harry Styles, Bruno Mars), spans the decades and he picks songs that are right in my Q zone. He may play Signed, Sealed, Delivered by Stevie Wonder and then jump to Under the Bridge by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Even when he makes outrageous claims (like he invented the question mark) like he’s spinning in his chair because he likes this next song so much (it was Video Killed the Radio Star), I don’t mind. I’ve come to trust his taste in music and he plays songs that I mostly like.

PLUS, it sounds like he cares about the station. There have been other personalized stations before such as Billy Joel, and it’s clear that they get a day or two with Billy, they get the sound bites, and Billy is back up the Long Island Expressway. I don’t know the ins and outs of production, but you’ll hear “good morning”, and “this is for the nighttime”, and it almost seems like he’s curating for that day. I’d be curious to know how much effort he puts into it and how often it is updated.

All that being said, I approve this station and recommend you give it a listen. Two thumbs up.
