Businesses shouldn’t have to ask for additional tips. It should receive what it deserves. I’m not anti-tipping either. When someone does a job that deserves a tip, and they made me feel like they did their job well, and I want to reward them for it, i’ll tip. That’s how tipping should work. It’s understood that no one does any act out of the kindness of their heart anymore.
Real life example from Uber. Here is what my app showed (a bit shopped but not the actual scenario):
Why would $8 dollars even be an option for a $7 fare? How’s $1, $2, and $3? It used to be that too. Now I see percentages and wildly out of proportion dollar amounts. Over tipping is rampant. Restaurants want you to tip for pick up. The establishment is putting the food in a bag and has a line for additional tip. I went golfing and paid $140 for the greens fee and there was an additional tip line. I should mention I had to tip the caddy as well. People are saying, “boo-hoo, you’re playing $140 rounds of golf and complaining.” Fair point. However, I don’t mind paying because someone is requesting an amount I agree to. I don’t like paying more money because someone is asking.
A final example at a restaurant I went to. A beer was $7. I paid cash. $3 dollars were brought back. What the hell am I supposed to do? $1 is cheap. $2 is right. $3 is what I did because I said, “fuck it, this person probably needs the dollar more than me.” That was a $10 beer. Europe doesn’t have this issue. Our system is skewed because most people don’t tip well. So the people who do tip well have to make up for the others shit attitudes. I probably wouldn’t be complaining this much except it’s going in the wrong direction. More tipping. Not less.
Sam chiming in here.
I agree with you to an extent. I always tip well when eating at a restaurant, 20-25%, and I justify that by the impact it has on the server. Literally the difference of a few dollars changes their perception of themselves from “What am I doing wrong? Am I ugly? Am I not likable?“ to the total opposite. I’m paying to build the confidence of others and the net effect on the world is way positive for the price of a few bucks.
For other things, I’m with you. I don’t have a problem tipping $1 on a $7 beer. All they did was pour it the same way they’d pour a $3 beer. I’d do it myself if they let me. You can’t tip everyone in a service role, it’s unmanageable. If that extra money was so important to the success of their business as a whole, it would be built in to the price.
