Adam texted me, “Holy fuck, Sailor Song is sung by a chick!” I already knew Gigi Perez was a woman, so I confirmed his revelation. That doesn’t make me a music expert, but I’d hold my own on most music trivia teams.
I grew up in the ’90s, so I’ve got the grunge scene covered. In high school, it was all rap. After that came a few years of classic rock, followed by a deep dive into the ’80s. I’ve managed to keep up with what’s current too. Lately, I’ve been working my way through every Dire Straits album – and On Every Street really struck a chord with me.
I went with the live performance because it pulls the crowd into the mix – and it absolutely rips harder than the studio version in the final minute. I skimmed through the lyrics, and they definitely carry meaning, but for me it’s the build-up that hits: the tempo picks up, the band locks in, and by the end they’re just flat-out rockin’. In that live rendition, they go full throttle in the last minute – it’s awesome.
Mark Knopfler’s reputation as one of the top 25 guitarists of all time is well-earned, so calling Dire Straits one of my favorite bands doesn’t feel like a stretch. If you’ve got 14 minutes to spare, give Telegraph Road a listen. It’s worth every second.
A great artist is one where you put on their album and you’re content. I’m a Michael Bolton fan. For my money, I don’t know if it gets any better than when he sings When a Man Loves a Woman. Brother in Arms, their most hit producing album, brings 5 tracks that have been listened to over 100 million times. To me though, I’ve been digging the On Every Street album. The songs aren’t radio songs as I’d never play a song on that album to a group, but to me, it’s a delight. Did you enjoy the live song?
