I don’t like taking sleeping pill’s to go to sleep. It feels like it’s cheating. I take this stance with just about every “medicine” that is out there. Ridiculous word by the way. Doctors use it religiously because they make money prescribing pills. If they called it “this makes us money medicine”, I’m not sure as many people would be so apt to take it. I understand sleeping pills are over the counter, but this should at least set the tone of where my stance is.

When I write cheating, I mean that your body shouldn’t need a sleeping pill to go to sleep. What happens when you start to take these pills is that you become dependent on them and then you can’t go to sleep without them. This is a far bigger problem than suffering from trying to go to sleep which I’m sure is debatable. Much like cigarettes, if you never start with the sleeping pill, you never have a problem.

Which brings me to why I take sleeping pills from time to time. Last night I went to sleep at around midnight and awoke at 3:30 in the morning. I couldn’t go back to sleep. I stirred until about 5am thinking about my life for an hour and half which I would describe as a nightmare. I ended up getting a shower, getting some Wawa, and going to work. So I had a relatively long day at work and went home and immediately feel asleep for 2 hours. Now I’m posting at 9:36pm and won’t be able to sleep until lord knows when. I will most likely take a sleeping pill to avoid this and get a good night’s sleep. How do I feel about this after knowing what I know about pills?

It’s a lesser of two evils on a slippery slope. Getting no sleep and suffering through a day sucks. Becoming dependent on sleeping pills is a bad habit. This is where I’ll hold an opinion on what is wrong with our society. I’m posting my position on the matter. Millions of humans will not think twice about taking any pill…ever. Pills are the biggest undercover problem in our society next to gambling & alcohol. They are all equally similar vices. They help us get through our meaningless existence without questioning it too much. I would love to see a poll of the people you encounter on a daily basis and how many of them are on some mind altering substance whether it be as (seemingly) harmless like Advil, or sedative like pain killers, or sniffing glue in the parking lot. I’d guess 80%. The other 20% are all on suicide watch.
