The Stortz family is on a vacation for a week in Avalon, NJ. It’s the one time of year where we all get together to annoy the shit out of one another. There are a few kids running around – Jude, Josie, and baby Harrison – who spice up the day to day a bit. Adding the elements of little kids does change the vibe a bit, but all in all, it’s entertaining for me to see this lifestyle.

Yesterday we went to the “free” Cape May Zoo which I was impressed with. I saw giraffes, lions, bears, zebras, reptiles, and a few marsupials. I quote free because the lady in the parking lot has a big bucket with “donations” on it, and when you enter the park there are another 4 buckets filled with cash where you can sponsor some animals. Judo had a great time watching the monkeys howl and swing around.
Another event was the annual Stortz men golf outing. To start the day Jeff, Sam, and I went into Marge’s diner not thinking much about JC. A few minutes went by and we hadn’t seen him in the restaurant. We thought he went to the bathroom. After another few minutes he comes in and says he got stuck. Stuck? In the car? The backseat had a child’s lock and instead of trying the other passenger door, he climbed through the front seat and exited ala Ace Ventura 2.

Shoregate proved challenging for the boys and lived up to its reputation as a hard course. I was able to fire a 39 on the back…but that was after a 53. I used a high hands technique that I sometimes forget about on the course. We’re playing again tomorrow so we’ll see if JC creates more stories.
It’s hard to have 9 adults on a vacation, with 3 kids, and go to restaurants to eat as a group. Which leads to a lot of discussion about dinner and planning. Since this isn’t a regular occurrence, it’s easier to manage. My thoughts tend to drift towards enjoying these times spent as a family unit. The stark reality of life is that nothing last forever. Everyone knows that no one knows the point of what we’re doing here, so we’re enjoying it while we can.
