We watched Marty Supreme this weekend and I have to address something about this movie.

I know it’s been out for 6 months. I don’t need any ‘late-to-the-party‘ comments, though I would take that over no comments on this post, so go right ahead.

First things first, the movie was solid. It sacrificed quality for entertainment, excitement, emotion, etc. Timmy did great even if the story was stupid at times. They could’ve easily cut 30 minutes of the dog and most Kay Stone interactions in the second half of the film, but overall, worth watching.

That said, there was one thing I couldn’t get past.

It wasn’t the fact that it took place in the ’50s though they spoke and acted like it was present day. It wasn’t breaking into the house at midnight for the dog and the guy getting his head exploded. It wasn’t even Marty not taking off his tie for the start of the final match, which was so untrue to his character.

It was…. THE PING PONG!!!

It’s 2026. A 10 year old in his basement can make a realistic video of his house being invaded by racoons with machine guns yet this the best we got for ping pong on a $70 million budget??? Forrest Gump in the ’90s was better than this.

I know it’s not the point of the movie, I get it, but Marty himself would be pissed off if he knew this is what it looked like. It’s not true to the sport. Every big scene with ping pong was an immediate reminder that there’s no ball being hit. There are just two doofuses swinging wildly at air and the director saying “we’ll just CGI / AI this in later it’s all good“. Am I oversimplifying? Yes. Is it probably really hard to do? Of course. But it’s genuinely worse than Forrest.

As a purist, I was disappointed.
