I just finished watching season 2 of The Rehearsal, Nathan Fielder’s HBO show. No spoilers below, but an endorsement.
Simply put, this was unlike anything I’ve ever seen before.
In so many different ways, to my knowledge, there has been nothing like this. I Think You Should Leave, which is amazing and beloved, is obviously unique, but it works within a framework that dozens of other shows have worked in. This season of The Rehearsal is like creating an entirely new way of making a comedy series, and I thought it was fantastic.
Nathan has always toed the line between is this interaction / scenario real or is this set up?, clearly beginning with Nathan For You. But this takes it to such a dramatic next level that it deserves its own classification. He’s a master at having you think “Oh my god, is this real? This is so absurd that it can’t be real. But I guess it could be real. In fact, I think it has to be real, but there’s no way this is real!“
With that said, if you haven’t seen it, you may ask “is it funny?” to which I would say undoubtedly yes. The absurdity and cringey-ness level up episode after episode until somehow, the final episode isn’t so much comedy as an absolutely riveting, dramatic finale, all the while not being sure if anything that’s going on is actually real or not.
If you’re looking for something unique, watch this.
