Yesterday was the 9th Annual Ursinus College Alumni Mile, one of the highlights of everyone’s year!
For me, the race was a question mark. I ran about 70 miles in January and then my Euro trip halted everything. I thought 5:00 was a reasonable goal but really had no idea.
Jamie had run an impressive 16:27 5k earlier in the day and Vince said he was trying to run quick, so I figured I’d just try to stick with those two if I could to start.
The pace was fast from the start, about 70 through the first quarter, I was more like 72. I tucked in behind Jamie as Vince lead the way 5-10 meters ahead. We hit half right around 2:25 – 2:26 and were creeping up.
With 400 left, Jamie had pulled us near even with Vince as we crossed 1209 in about 3:45 (slow third 400) and I decided to go. I had more left than I thought and held on for the win in 4:52 with Jamie not far behind. I was kind of shocked I was able to close that quickly and felt pretty good doing it.
I would be remiss not the mention that Drew probably would have run 4:50 in he were in this same race. BUT he couldn’t make it!
After the race was the usual Trappe buffet. I write the same shit every year, but it really is a great time hanging out with everyone and catching up. The fact that 20+ alums show up just to run this and hang out after is awesome. I’m only partially kidding when I say it’s a highlight of my year.
Last year, this meet was the beginning of my downfall with my Achilles injury. A year later, I feel like it could be the beginning of my ascension. I don’t want to declare anything, but being able to run that time in that way on that training has sort of sparked the fire again to run fast.

Great racing on rather minimal training. I recommend getting a Strava! May or may not be your kind of thing, but possibly worth a try to help keep the spark alive to train.
